Senior Wordings Consultant

Hybrid working, City of London.
Arthur is delighted to have partnered a leading specialist insurer. This client has very recently won awards for being the best employer in the insurance industry. 
They are active in both the Lloyd's and company market. 
I have been appointed to help them find a Wordings professional as they establish their in-house department.
The team is led by the Head of Wordings, this role will partner closely with Underwriters in the management of risk relating to all underwriting documentation whilst providing training and engagement cross-departmentally on insurance regulation, law and specific wordings related matters.  

In this role you will be handling property, casualty, and financial lines business. As time goes on you will have the opportunity to handle a wider variety of classes.

Your responsibilities include: 

  • Contribute to, monitor, and advise on the wordings business plan developments and changes in order to ensure relevance, compliance and optimal delivery
  • Draft more complex or special policy wordings and other support documents to ensure accuracy and effectiveness as well as reviewing, advising on & amending specific clauses 
  • Become a reliable and trusted advisor to the business on legal and regulatory issues that impact on policy wordings
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of market, legal and FCA requirements & guidelines so that wordings meet legal requirements 
  • Deliver training and coaching to team members, underwriters, and UAs to improve wordings knowledge and application
  • To be aware of the business plans for each portfolio and its impact on underwriter documentation and prioritise work accordingly including team planning of medium-term document review and new product projects
  • To be aware of an anticipate market led developments and feed this into wording strategy.
  • To propose and support EO Wordings Team initiatives to ensure practical support is provided to the business
  • Supervise and manage junior wordings team members, share knowledge and support their professional development
  • Assist in appointment, dismissal, performance management and reward of the team, establishing clear accountabilities and authority levels

Qualifications and experience required: 

  • Relevant and or transferable legal qualifications, preferably a law degree
  • Experience working in an insurance wordings team in house, or within the insurance team of a firm of solicitors 
  • Extensive experience in drafting, advising on and negotiating insurance policy wordings
  • Extensive technical understanding of insurance regulation and market practice, specifically insurance law knowledge 
  • Confident communicator with the ability to explain complex legal/regulatory issues clearly and succinctly
