We are partnering with a leading international specialty insurer to recruit an experienced, ambitious and adaptable Head of Wordings to join its underwriting function in London.
This is an excellent opportunity to play a pivotal role in the development, analysis and governance of technical policy wordings across a diverse portfolio of specialty insurance lines. Working closely with underwriting, claims, compliance and legal teams, you will provide expert drafting support and technical guidance that helps differentiate the business in the market.
The RoleYou will be responsible for the construction, review and enhancement of policy wordings across a broad range of classes, including:
  • Property
  • Marine & Energy
  • Professional Lines
  • Casualty
  • Credit & Political Risk
  • Renewable Energy
  • Aviation
This position offers significant exposure to both internal stakeholders and external broker partners, allowing you to influence underwriting strategy through robust, commercially focused policy wording solutions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Analyse and review both existing and new policy wordings, including open market and delegated authority documentation.
  • Draft, amend and negotiate bespoke clauses and manuscript policy wordings to meet underwriting and client requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with underwriting, claims, compliance and reinsurance teams to deliver consistent and commercially effective wording solutions.
  • Support the development of underwriting governance, minimum wording standards and peer review processes.
  • Provide pre-bind and post-bind technical wording advice, identifying potential coverage issues and emerging risks.
  • Deliver training, presentations and knowledge-sharing sessions across underwriting teams.
  • Mentor junior colleagues and contribute to the ongoing development of technical expertise within the business.
  • Engage with industry bodies and market forums to ensure policy wordings remain current and aligned with market developments.
  • Build strong relationships with brokers and clients, supporting negotiations on complex coverage issues where required.
About YouWe're looking for someone with strong technical drafting expertise and a collaborative approach who enjoys working closely with underwriters and brokers to deliver commercially sound solutions.
You will ideally have:
  • Extensive experience drafting and analysing insurance policy wordings.
  • Proven expertise in bespoke and manuscript policy wording construction.
  • A strong understanding of London Market standard clauses and class-specific wording structures.
  • Experience supporting multiple specialty insurance classes, with First Party business being essential.
  • The ability to interpret complex wording requests and produce clear, precise and commercially robust documentation.
  • Confidence presenting and negotiating wording solutions with underwriters, brokers and senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines.
  • The ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience evaluating new market clauses and emerging coverage trends.
Desirable
  • Experience in Contract Wordings across multiple specialty classes.
  • ACII qualified or actively working towards qualification.
  • Law degree or legal qualification.
